How to choose a background: For the most part, you will only want a white background if you know you will always use your image on a white backdrop (white t-shirt, white mugs, white billboards, etc).

If you will be (or might be) using your image on various types of colors, you would want to choose a transparent background. Transparent backgrounds allow the object color to show "through" your image.
